One person died on Monday after a ZIMTA bus carrying teachers crashed head-on with a haulage truck in Macheke.
The bus was ferrying teachers coming from the holidays and returning to their duty stations in preparation for the opening of schools. Details of the accident are still sketchy, but a video circulating on social media shows the extent of the damage.
The Zimbabwe Teachers Association (ZIMTA) bus collided head-on with a heavily loaded haulage truck along the Harare-Mutare highway. When the two massive vehicles crashed, the bus broke most windows and dented before swerving off the road. The truck was also pushed out of the way and parked in the grass away from the road.
The driver of the ZIMTA bus, 50-year-old Odreck Ndhlovu, sadly died in the bus and truck accident.
ZIMTA Chief Executive Officer Dr Sifiso Ndlovu confirmed the tragic accident:
“We report sadly that our ZIMTA bus (Harare) was involved in a fatal head-on collision with a haulage truck in the Macheke area this afternoon (Monday). It is with great sadness that we lost the driver, Odreck Ndhlovu. Ndhlovu was a dedicated worker who lost his life while on duty, and we mourn the loss of one of our own. We grieve with his family, which has lost a father, brother, son and breadwinner.”
