In a recent statement, Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi outlined strict regulations regarding the use of police motorcades and escort vehicles.
Commissioner Nyathi emphasized that motorized escorts are strictly reserved for the State Presidium, stating, “In terms of the country’s laws, only the State Presidium will be provided with motorized escorts or a State motorcade.” He made it clear that the police are prohibited from offering escort services for private functions such as weddings, church gatherings, birthday parties, or any other non-state events.

Furthermore, he warned that no private or personal vehicle on the roads may resemble police vehicles, either through the use of beacon lights or sirens. “The law does not allow for the use of any private motorcade of any form on the country’s roads, whether with beacon lights or sounding any form of siren. The law will take its course for those found on the wrong side of it,” he stated as reported by Herald.
The ZRP reminded motorists to comply with Statutory Instrument 129 of 2015 regarding road traffic regulations, which states that the use of blue lights or beacons is exclusive to the police. Those found with vehicles fitted with such lights will face legal consequences.
Additionally, Commissioner Nyathi highlighted the prohibition against driving vehicles without registration plates, calling it a legal offense. He warned, “The Zimbabwe Republic Police will thus impound any vehicle moving on the roads with no plates. Government vehicles are not excluded from the number plates requirement.”
He also directed officers to actively enforce rules against kombi operators and their crews who disregard safety regulations, including those allowing touts to precariously cling to the back of vehicles.
In reinforcing these messages, Nyathi urged the public to help maintain law and order by adhering to traffic regulations and standards. He concluded by stating, “The public is urged to assist in maintaining law and order by strictly observing this requirement,” highlighting the importance of complying with road rules to safeguard lives and uphold community safety.
