The tragic accident that occurred on the Harare-Bulawayo Road in the early hours of December 8, 2024, claimed the lives of seven individuals and left 21 others inj_red when an Inter Africa bus collided with a stationary Freightliner haulage truck.
The calamity happened around 3:30 AM at the 330-kilometre peg, where the impact was devastating, resulting in the immediate fatalities of seven passengers.
Following the crash, emergency responders transported the deceased to the Gweru Provincial Hospital mortuary for identification, while the _njured were also admitted there for urgent medical care.
According to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), of the 21 injured passengers, six received treatment and were discharged, but 16 others remained hospitalized as their conditions required further observation.
In a public statement, the ZRP released the names of five victims who have been confirmed by their next of kin, facilitating the grieving process for families affected by this tragedy.
The confirmed victims are:
Mutanga Brian, a male adult from Bocha, Marange
Manyise Madubeko (45), a male adult from 4th Street, Bulawayo
Ncube Sinqobile (43), a female adult from Xanti Village, Esigodini
Muchemwa Matienga (62), a male adult from Lasper Road, Harrisvale, Bulawayo
Mafukidze Edmen Collin (39), a male adult from Overspill, Epworth
Efforts continue to identify the remaining two victims, as the community mourns the loss and reflects on the need for improved road safety measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
The ZRP has urged the public to remain cautious while traveling, particularly at night, as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident are conducted.
