Fake Dr Matthew Lani’s family has finally spoken after he was exposed for lying that he is a medical doctor.
Dr Matthew got the shock of his life after people exposed him for pretending to be a medical doctor. The popular TikToker gained prominence on social media for dishing out medical advice.
He allegedly used the credentials of Dr Sanele Zingelwa, a second-year medical intern at Tembisa Provincial Tertiary Hospital in Gauteng. He also claimed to have studied medicine at Wits University, but the university denied that he was ever a student there.
Dr Matthew Lani gained popularity on TikTok by posting videos on topics such as weight loss, cancer, diabetes, HIV, and Covid-19. He also sold weight-loss pills on his social media accounts and was interviewed by several radio stations as a health expert.
The Gauteng health department opened a case of impersonating a doctor against Dr Matthew. The Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) also said he is not a registered health practitioner and violated the Health Professions Act. Yesterday, he was banned from TikTok.
Dr Matthew Lani’s cousin released a TikTok video speaking on the bogus medical doctor. He said:
“I’m very embarrassed to say this, but he is my cousin, and we are aware as the Lani Family because we have been seeing rounds on social media. How do I even begin to say this? Because I am not even allowed to say anything on social media. As a family, we have decided to distance ourselves from him.”
