In a shocking incident, two students at Walter Sisulu University were caught cheating during an examination held at the institution.
The students wrote the accounting exam in the institution’s Great Hall of its Umtata campus. The entire incident was captured on the hall’s surveillance cameras, revealing a well-coordinated cheating operation that went unnoticed by the invigilators.
The video footage, which has since gone viral, shows a female student surreptitiously passing her answer sheet under her armpit to a friend seated behind her. In return, the student behind her also handed over her answer sheet. Their exchange of answers continued as the examination progressed, all while surrounded by their fellow students.
It is clear from the video that the students involved were unaware of the security cameras placed strategically around the Great Hall. One striking aspect of the incident is that another student who witnessed the cheating did not speak up or alert the examiners.
The university told EWN that it has since instituted disciplinary proceedings against the two third-year students. It added that the misconduct soiled its reputation and warned other students from being academically dishonest.
