In a remarkable incident that could easily be mistaken for a scene from a low-budget Fast and Furious movie, a group of commuter omnibuses, commonly called kombis, engaged in a thrilling high-octane chase through Harare’s central business district as they tried to evade capture by municipal police.
The entire incident, captured on camera, depicts the kombis speeding away from a pursuing municipal police truck. Eventually, three of the kombis successfully evade capture, but the police manage to corner one kombi.
Instead of conceding defeat, the daring kombi driver executed a swift reversal, made a U-turn, and brazenly drove against oncoming traffic, putting the lives of passengers at risk. Helplessly, the municipal police officers could only watch as the kombi swiftly drove away.
Expressing his concern over the incident, Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume voiced his dismay in an interview with ZTN Prime. He criticized the municipal police for resorting to heavy-handed tactics that jeopardized the safety of both motorists and passengers.
“It’s a ghastly scene. It looks like a scene from a Nigerian movie badly scripted. We should not allow that kind of policing. I’m gonna talk to the head of Traffic Police, to the head of our safety department that whatever we do we must remember that life is sacrosanct and we cannot and we should not create a George of the Jungle policing element,” he said.
He pledged to introduce modern and effective policing methods, emphasizing the need for municipal police to be trained in appropriate responses to different situations.
“We are going to look at more modern ways of policing and more effective ways of policing and we have to rank our crimes. You are not chasing an armed robber, you’re chasing someone who has committed a traffic offence. So there must be a sense of proportion and a sense of perspective,” Jacob Mafume said.
