Incoming CCC Councillor Exposes outgoing Chitungwiza Mayor’s Alleged Misinformation

Allegations of misinformation surround outgoing Chitungwiza Mayor, Kevin Mutimbanyoka, as an incoming councillor from the CCC party sheds light on what is being termed a distortion of achievements during Mutimbanyoka’s tenure.

The controversy unfolded after Mutimbanyoka convened a press conference at the council offices, wherein he made bold claims of transformative changes within the municipality. However, these claims have been refuted by a councillor from the CCC party, Lovemore Maiko, who questioned both the legitimacy of the press conference and the credibility of the achievements presented.

“It’s perplexing that Mutimbanyoka hosted a press conference at the council office, a privilege he is no longer entitled to.
He’s now an ordinary resident of Chitungwiza, and his touted accomplishments are far from reality,” said Maiko.

Maiko continued, asserting that during his tenure, he had secured substantial funds from the African Development Bank, which resulted in a notable donation of US$1.8 million. This financial injection was directed towards community development initiatives, casting a shadow of doubt on Mutimbanyoka’s claimed accomplishments.

The situation is compounded by Mutimbanyoka’s alleged commissioning of trucks, an act perceived as misleading to the residents, given that his term officially ended on August 22nd. Chitungwiza Residents Trust director Alice Kuveya, expressed disillusionment over what they perceived as unfulfilled promises by Mutimbanyoka.

Among these pledges were the commitment to improve water availability by December 2022, ensuring a garbage-free town, eradicating salary arrears by the previous year’s end, and guaranteeing timely salary disbursement by the 25th of each month.

Additionally, pledges to address road conditions and tackle sewer challenges were also left unfulfilled. During his press conference, Mutimbanyoka said that he had overseen the digitalization of Chitungwiza’s council operations and procured new vehicles for the council.

However, these assertions have been met with scepticism given the emerging allegations of misleading claims. The controversy underscores the broader issue of accountability and transparency in governance, particularly as local leaders transition between administrations.

The competing narratives regarding Mutimbanyoka’s legacy highlight the need for objective scrutiny and fact-checking to discern the true impact of his tenure.
