Trade unionist Obert Masaraure, convicted for obstructing justice after posting a solidarity message with a jailed leader of the ARTUZ teachers’ union, has been spared jail time.
According to Zimlive on X, a court issued him a wholly suspended 4-month jail sentence and fined him US$200.
Masaraure was convicted for sharing a message on his social media handle (formerly Twitter), calling for the release of a fellow trade unionist.
The president of the Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union (ARTUZ) was found guilty on Wednesday of either obstructing the course of justice or inciting public violence, an offense derived from Section 184(1)(c) of the Criminal Code.

He had been arrested for this offense on July 8, 2022, and has since been intermittently attending court proceedings during the trial.
