The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed two separate fire incidents in Harare, causing significant damage to property and destruction of crops.
The first incident took place on May 31, 2024. A fire broke out at a business premises located along Kirkman Road in Tynwald, Harare. The fire, which is believed to have started at around 10 a.m., quickly spread and engulfed several vehicles, machinery, and other equipment on the premises.
A total of 12 Mercedes Benz vehicles, lawn mowers, generators, and nine gum poles were destroyed in the fire. A 5000-liter plastic tank was also burnt, causing a significant loss to the business owner. The cause of the fire is still unknown, and an investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The second incident took place on June 1, 2024. A veld fire spread across a 10-hectare maize field at Shamwari Farm in Mt Hampden, Harare. The fire is believed to have started at around 2 p.m. and was fueled by strong winds and dry vegetation.

The fire department was quickly dispatched to the scene, and firefighters worked tirelessly to contain the blaze, but not before the fire had destroyed a significant portion of the maize crop.
The incident highlights the need for increased vigilance in preventing veld fires, particularly during the dry season. The ZRP has urged farmers and residents to take necessary precautions to prevent such incidents from occurring.
An investigation into the cause of the veld fire is also underway, and those found responsible will be prosecuted accordingly.
