Julius Malema isn’t one to back down from a challenge, and his response to Donald Trump’s call for his arrest was no exception. With characteristic sass, Malema dismissed Trump’s concerns as mere “gossip” among older men in Washington, saying, “A group of older men meet in Washington to gossip about me. No significant amount of intelligence evidence has been produced about white genocide. We will not agree to compromise our political principles on land expropriation without compensation for political expediency”.
Malema’s defiant response came after Trump played a montage of videos featuring Malema singing the controversial “Kill the Boer” chant during a meeting with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa at the White House. Trump demanded to know why Malema hadn’t been arrested, claiming that the chant incited violence against white farmers. Ramaphosa, visibly uncomfortable, defended South Africa’s robust legal system, while Malema doubled down on his commitment to land expropriation without compensation.
