For UFC welterweight Themba Gorimbo, the combat sports arena is often less brut@l than the emotional battles that unfold outside the cage.
His recent defeat at UFC 310 not only left marks on his record but also unveiled a painful truth about loyalty and betrayal within his own family.
Gorimbo had been enjoying an impressive four-fight win streak when the chance to fight Vicente Luque arose after Nick Diaz withdrew.
Accepting the bout on short notice was a significant gamble; a victory could have catapulted him into the UFC rankings and transformed his life.
However, a mere sixty seconds into the fight, Luque submitted Gorimbo, leading to a devastating loss that felt unbearable.

Yet, the most profound pain came post-fight when Gorimbo faced the shocking reality of his family’s reactions. In a candid interview with The Pivot, he revealed the deep hurt he experienced upon discovering that some of his cousins were celebrating his defeat.
Instead of offering support, they were capturing videos of themselves rejoicing, filmed in Danone, the impoverished neighborhood where they all grew up.
“After I lost this last fight, some of my cousins were celebrating. They sent me a video of them in a place where we were 15 years ago… Just this small circle in Danone,” he shared, clearly hurt by their lack of solidarity.
Ironically, Gorimbo’s mission to uplift his community—including efforts to provide clean water—has been met with resentment rather than support.
