Hailstorm leaves trail of destruction in Zvishavane
PROPERTY worth thousands of dollars was destroyed after a hailstorm ripped off the roof of three classroom blocks at Gresham Primary School in Zvishavane this Wednesday.
The hailstorm left 159 learners stranded after ripping off asbestos sheets and destroying textbooks, exercise books and furniture.
The incident and the damage caused were confirmed by Gresham Primary School Head, Mr Chrispen Moyo.
“There was a hailstorm on Wednesday that left a trail of destruction at our school where classroom roofs were blown away. Huge trees were also uprooted in the vicinity of the school. We have so far submitted our report to the local authorities, and I can safely say no fatalities were recorded. All pupils are safe, only properties were damaged,” he said.
Zvishavane District Development Coordinator, Mr Darlington Chokera is on the ground assessing the extent of the damage together with the District Civil Protection Unit (CPU).
“We are currently on the ground to assess the extent of the damage. We are also attending to emergency cases to see how best to assist with the help from the CPU,” he said.
