‘Hire a bus, earn big’ – check affordable business ideas to start in Zimbabwe

A savvy netizen has humorously advised Zimbabweans to make money by hiring a luxurious bus to transport goods and passengers especially during busy seasons.

He detailed the expenses and profits with the following calculation:

‘With $2500, you can hire a luxurious bus and take it to Joza, where you can transport 70+ passengers at $60 per person. This amounts to $4200, plus the return trip of $4200, totaling $8400. After deducting the cost of hiring the bus ($2500), you’ll have $5900 left. You can then sell goods worth $900, making it a total of $5800. When you return with the goods, you’ll have over $10,000 in less than a week!'”

Zimbabwe offers a variety of business opportunities that can be launched with minimal investment.

On a more serious noted, here’s a comprehensive list of ventures you can consider to kickstart your entrepreneurial journey without breaking the bank.

1. Homemade Bath Products
Creating bath products like bath bombs and soaps can be a fun and profitable business. Gather ingredients from your local grocery store and design unique products that stand out. Selling online or at craft fairs can help you reach a broader audience.

2. Barbering
Barbering is a highly sought-after service in Zimbabwe. With basic skills that can be easily learned, you don’t need significant capital. You can start from home or your garage without the need for expensive equipment. While it’s a popular choice for earning extra income, be prepared to face competition from fellow barbers in your area.

3. Canning Vegetables and Fruits
Canning is an economical way to preserve food at home. You can start by making tomato sauce or other canned goods using jars and lids designed for canning. This venture not only helps in food preservation but also provides a unique product to sell in your community.

4. Delivery Service
A delivery service can cater to various needs, such as delivering groceries, food, clothes, or furniture. To launch this business, identify what items are commonly requested in your community, pick them up, and deliver them to your customers. This service can be a flexible and profitable business opportunity.

5. Flyer Distribution
Starting a flyer distribution service involves creating promotional materials to advertise specific businesses. You can print flyers at home or through a print shop. Identify local businesses that need advertising, and offer your services to deliver flyers to potential customers. This business can be profitable as clients increase their customer base through your efforts.

6. Embroidery Business
If you have a passion for sewing and design, consider starting an embroidery business. Focus on creating custom products like shirts, mugs, or personalized accessories. This venture allows you to express your creativity while providing a unique and in-demand service.

7. Event Planning
Event planning is about organizing various types of gatherings, from small parties to larger events like weddings. Start by planning smaller events to gain experience, and gradually expand your services. Keeping a detailed timeline and checklist will ensure that all elements are addressed efficiently.

8. Freelance Writing
For those with a knack for writing, freelance blogging is an excellent way to make money from home. This flexible job allows you to build a portfolio, improving your writing skills while catering to various clients. Professional, well-written content is essential for reputation and repeat business.

11. Homemade Food Products
Starting a homemade food business, such as baking cookies or cakes, is another avenue to explore. Begin with small batches for friends and family before scaling up. This personal touch can generate a loyal customer base who appreciate homemade goods.

12. Ironing Service
If you enjoy ironing, you can offer this service to individuals in your community. Set up a simple workspace with a table and ironing board, and advertise your services. Word of mouth and local flyers can help attract customers.

13. Kitchen Cleanup Service
Provide a kitchen cleanup service after meal preparation, leveraging your skills in food prep. This business can cater to busy families or individuals who appreciate having a clean kitchen without putting in the time themselves.

14. Laundry Services
If you enjoy doing laundry, consider starting a coin-operated laundry shop. Initially, this may require some investment to purchase machines, but it can become a sustainable business. You can also create and sell your own laundry soaps to enhance your offerings.

15. Magazine Rack Business
Starting a magazine rack business involves curating a selection of popular magazines for sale. Decide on selling from home, online, or a physical shop. Understanding your target audience’s preferences will be key to your success in this venture.

These business ideas not only provide low-cost startup opportunities but also cater to various skills and interests.

With dedication and time, you can create a successful venture in Zimbabwe.
