A shocking incident unfolded at the Eastern Highlands Tea Plantation Estate in Honde Valley, where a security guard’s actions turned deadly. Lovemore Matsanura, a 53-year-old security guard, has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of an unknown man.
The events leading up to the shooting began on the morning of May 4, 2025, when Matsanura discovered 90kg of organic matter hidden in a tea field. A team of six security guards, including Yadlin Muchangweya and Moses Waramba, were deployed in an ambush-style operation to apprehend the individuals responsible.
As the suspects returned to collect the hidden sacks around 8:30pm, the security guards sprang into action. When Waramba confronted them, the suspects charged towards him with machetes. To deter them, Waramba fired a warning shot into the air. However, the suspects continued to advance, prompting Muchangweya to fire another shot into the sky.
In the ensuing chaos, one of the suspects fell to the ground with a gunshot wound. It’s unclear whether the fatal shot was the warning shot or one of the shots fired by the security guards.
The police were promptly informed, and officers from ZRP Ruda attended the scene. The two firearms involved were seized for ballistics analysis, and Muchangweya and Waramba were arrested. The deceased’s body was taken to Hauna District Hospital for a post-mortem.
Manicaland police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka urged security personnel to exercise restraint and avoid being trigger-happy. The police are working to identify the deceased and determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
As the investigation unfolds, questions remain. Was the use of force justified? Will the security guards face charges? The outcome of the investigation will determine the fate of those involved.
