A 29-year-old InDrive driver, Mannex Nyengedza, from Sunningdale, recently fell victim to a brazen robbery. Four armed robbers, posing as passengers, hired Nyengedza’s services from Harare’s Central Business District. However, their true intentions were revealed when they reached Old Mazowe Road.
The suspects, seated in the front and back seats, turned violent, pulling the handbrake and brandishing an unidentified pistol. Nyengedza was dragged out of his red Toyota Passo (registration number AGN 1950), searched, and robbed of his cellphone and US$380 in cash. During the assault, he sustained a swollen forehead.
Fortunately, the stolen vehicle was later recovered, dumped in a ditch along Lorraine Drive, intact and undamaged. Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Luckmore Chakanza confirmed the incident, stating that police are investigating the armed robbery case.
Authorities are still investigating the incident, and no arrests have been made. Police have urged ride-hailing drivers to be extra vigilant when picking up unknown passengers, especially groups.
This incident serves as a stark reminder for drivers to prioritize their safety and security. As the investigation continues, Nyengedza’s experience highlights the importance of caution when interacting with strangers.
