The Resident Minister for Manicaland, Honorable Advocate M. Mugadza, recently conducted a tour of the Romsely Irrigation Scheme to oversee its progress.
The construction work has currently reached 90.6% completion, with the targeted finish date set for June 30, 2024.
The Romsely Irrigation Scheme is designed to cover 384 hectares and accommodate 315 small-holder communal farmers, each allotted 1.2 hectares. Its water source is the perennial Mucheke River. The Department of Irrigation is currently constructing an 18 km canal to serve the entire irrigation scheme.
This initiative aims to transform the arid areas of Makoni into a productive green belt.
The scheme will primarily focus on cultivating high-value horticultural crops, grains, and oil crops, thereby contributing to food security for small-scale farmers.
It stands as a testament to the Second Republic’s commitment to ensuring food security for small-scale farmers.
