President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa hosted a congratulatory ceremony today at State House for the Zimbabwe National Rugby Team, The Zimbabwe Sables.
The team clinched the Rugby Africa Cup in Uganda earlier this year by defeating Algeria 29–3, marking their first title since 2012.
In recognition of their achievement, His Excellency President Emmerson Mnangagwa awarded a cash prize of US$6,500 to the players and technical team. Furthermore, the team presented 600 pairs of branded stockings, which the President plans to donate to a sports academy of his choice.
During the ceremony, the Sables gifted President Mnangagwa the championship trophy and a framed jersey signed by the entire team as a token of appreciation. Speaking at the event, President Mnangagwa remarked:
“The victory of our National Rugby Team is timely, coinciding with our nation’s efforts to reassert its place among sporting nations on the international stage. This milestone is yet another testament that Zimbabwe is ready to compete and excel at the highest levels of continental and global sports.”
Acting Minister of Sport, Arts, and Recreation, Hon. Kazembe Kazembe, highlighted the significance of the Sables’ achievement and its contribution to the country’s sporting aspirations, which align with the Vision 2030 initiative to elevate Zimbabwe’s global sports profile.
“The Rugby Africa Cup is the premier and only ranking tournament for all African countries competing for a spot in the 2027 Rugby World Cup. The Sables last won the cup in 2012 after defeating Uganda in the final. Since then, the top position has largely been dominated by Namibia,” said Minister Kazembe.
