The streets of Harare’s intersection of Sam Nujoma Street and Robert Mugabe Road turned ch@otic this morning (Wednesday) as a commuter omnibus careened out of control, causing multiple injuries to its passengers.
According to eyewitnesses who spoke to Herald, the omnibus was speeding in a desperate attempt to beat a red light.
However, as the vehicle made the ill-fated decision to overtake a City of Harare refuse compactor, it failed to clear the manoeuvre and collided with the garbage truck.

The impact of the crash caused the omnibus to swerve violently off the road, leaving multiple passengers trapped inside.
“When we arrived at the scene to help, the passengers were trapped in the kombi and we could not push the truck until we called for help and managed to release the passengers,” recounted Ms Dorcas Siziba, who witnessed the tr@gic event.
Emergency services quickly rushed to the scene, providing first aid to the injured passengers and transported them to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals for further treatment.
Meanwhile, an onlooker who spoke to the same news crew, Ms Betty Ngwerume, expressed her concern for the city’s chaotic traffic situation: “We need to give way to each other when traffic lights are not working. Unfortunately, this is a common problem in our city, and the drivers often fail to exercise caution when lights are not functioning properly.”
