Pressure mounts on police operatives to rid the country’s public transport system of unlicensed commuter omnibuses, as the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) recently launched a crackdown on over 13,500 unregistered kombis and pirate taxis in Harare.
The cat and mouse affair between law enforcement agents and kombi crews has often led to high-speed chases within crowded spaces, and in some cases, road traffic accidents.

In one such incident, a police officer is currently battling for life after his official vehicle was hit by a train at a rail level crossing in Marondera on Saturday evening.
According to a post on the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) X handle, the officer failed to observe level crossing rules, which instruct all drivers to stop and only proceed after establishing there is no train approaching.
The NRZ urged motorists, including law enforcement agents, to exercise caution when approaching level crossings and never try to race an approaching train.
However, it remains unclear if the accident was indeed caused by the police officer chasing after a fleeing kombi.
