Zimbabwean Exemption Permit (ZEP) holders in South Africa can breathe a sigh of relief after Home Affairs Minister Dr L.A. Schreiber announced a 12-month extension for the permits, now valid until November 28, 2025.
This decision follows a Gauteng High Court order requiring more consultation with affected stakeholders and ensures ZEP holders can remain in South Africa legally without fear of deportation or penalties for their immigration status.
Key Highlights of the Permit Extension
Validity Extension: All ZEPs are officially extended until November 28, 2025.
Deportation Protection: Holders are safeguarded from arrest, detention, or deportation solely due to expired permits during this period.
Freedom of Movement: ZEP holders can leave and re-enter South Africa as long as they meet all other immigration requirements.
The announcement, detailed in Immigration Directive No. 15 of 2024, reaffirms the government’s commitment to fair consultation and a balanced approach to resolving ZEP-related matters.
Employers, landlords, and service providers have been directed to continue recognizing ZEPs as valid documentation during this extension. The Department of Home Affairs also clarified that no ZEP holder is required to provide alternative permits until further notice.
