VIDEO: Zimbabwe introduces it’s first humanoid robot, Sophia

The University of Zimbabwe unveiled the country’s first humanoid robot, named Sophia, on its campus earlier yesterday.

This landmark event marks a significant stride for Zimbabwe as it embraces innovations in technology and artificial intelligence (AI).

Sophia, developed through a collaboration between global robotics leader Hanson Robotics and a team of researchers from the University of Zimbabwe specializing in computer science and AI, showcases a wide array of human-like capabilities. Built with advanced AI systems and computer vision, Sophia is capable of engaging in natural conversations, mimicking human movements, and seamlessly navigating her environment.

Honourable Tino Machakaire, the Minister of Youth, was present for the unveiling and praised the initiative, reflecting on the potential for AI in Zimbabwe’s future.

He shared his enthusiasm on X, stating, “The future of Zimbabwe in Artificial Intelligence is very bright as reflected today on the occasion of the launch of Zimbabwe’s first humanoid robot at the University of Zimbabwe. I had an interesting exchange with Sophia the humanoid robot on a range of contemporary subjects.”

Social media was abuzz following the event, as reactions varied among Zimbabweans.

While some celebrated the achievement as a step forward in keeping up with global technological trends, others raised concerns about the significance of the innovation. Reports indicate that Sophia was initially created in Hong Kong in 2016, leading critics to question the originality of the initiative.

Among the comments, one user, @Mutasao, noted, “How can the future of Zimbabwe in Artificial Intelligence be very bright when you launched a first (imported) humanoid robot at the University of Zimbabwe? This robot, Sophia, was developed in 2016 by the Hong Kong–based company Hanson Robotics.”

On a more positive note, another user, @gclionel, remarked, “This is great and it makes our varsities competitive in world rankings unlike academic (bookish) programs we are used to. At least a bit of hands-on deck is important.”

The introduction of Sophia signifies a pivotal moment for Zimbabwe in the realm of robotics and AI, highlighting both the potential for innovation and the ongoing dialogue about the originality of technological advancements in the region.
