This weekend, the social media landscape is buzzing with the latest sensation: the Stingy Men Association of Zimbabwe, abbreviated as SMaz. Trendsetters in Zimbabwe have been enthusiastically sharing mock-up membership cards, amplifying the movement’s reach.
One particularly popular tweet came from X user Mr. Kushi, whose own membership card has garnered over 30 retweets, helping to kickstart a wave of similar posts across Twitter.
Users have been playfully suggesting the creation of an official anthem, a headquarters, and even an oath to solidify their commitment to the association’s humorous ethos.

The concept of being “stingy” first emerged in Nigeria and has rapidly spread to various African nations, resonating with many who find amusement in its satirical take on relationships and finances. It’s not just a passing trend; back in December 2021, a Ugandan media supplement featured an article outlining a proposed constitution for the local chapter of the association.
In this article, Ian Ortega wittily remarked, “This constitution drafted in the year of the Pandemic will for generations to come define the meaning of austerity.” His tongue-in-cheek provisions included critical commentary about boyfriends being asked for money by their girlfriends. Notably, he stated, “Any daughter of Eve that asks for money shall be treated as an illegal immigrant and be labelled ‘not wife material.’”
Ortega further emphasized that members should feel no shame in rejecting any monetary request put before them, including those for transport or airtime. This humorous yet critical stance reflects broader conversations about financial expectations within romantic relationships, while also providing a platform for engagement and entertainment on social media.
