The Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZIMSTAT) has released statistics showing a significant increase in criminal activities in the country, with a total of 221,704 reported cases in the first quarter of 2024. This marks a 0.5% rise from the 221,596 recorded in the first quarter of 2023.
The data reveals that the national crime rate has increased to 1460.6 per 100,000 people, a slight uptick from the 1459.9 per 100,000 people recorded in the fourth quarter of 2023.
According to ZIMSTAT, the most common types of criminal activities reported during the period include:
Theft: accounting for 44.1% of all reported cases
Ass@ult: accounting for 24.5% of all reported cases
Burglary: accounting for 12.2% of all reported cases
Robbery: accounting for 8.5% of all reported cases
Murd3r and other serious crimes: accounting for 1.7% of all reported cases

The agency has warned that the rising trend in criminal activities is a cause for concern and requires urgent attention from law enforcement agencies and policymakers.
