The Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (Zimstat) has allocated a budget of US$120 million to conduct the country’s first-ever economic census, which is set to commence next month and span until 2026.
The census will provide a comprehensive shot of the country’s economic landscape, covering various sectors such as agriculture, industry, services, and government.
The agency hopes that the data collected will help inform policy-making, monitor economic development, and improve the overall quality of life for Zimbabweans.
The census will cover all provinces in the country, including rural and urban areas, and will involve a combination of household surveys, business surveys, and administrative records to gather information on various aspects of the economy.
The data collected during the census will be used to update the national accounts, improve poverty monitoring, enhance business planning, and support policy formulation.
The survey will provide valuable data on GDP, inflation, employment, and other macroeconomic indicators, which will help policymakers make informed decisions about investments and expansion.
The agency has already begun preparations for the census, including training enumerators and developing a comprehensive data collection plan.
