A Harare businessman recently experienced a devastating loss of R220,000 in a botched car-importing deal intended as a gift for his wife.
The businessman, identified as Macmillian Chiweshe, was scammed by a car dealer named Kelvin Kudzaishe Makuyana, who was arrested over the weekend and appeared in court yesterday according to H Metro.
The report further states that the fraudulent scheme began in May of last year when Chiweshe approached Makuyana with a request to import a VolksWagen 7 Model valued at R220,000.
Makuyana expressed his ability to facilitate the importation and soon provided Chiweshe with an invoice and a South African First National Bank account number (63034487298) for payment.
On May 8, Chiweshe transferred the full amount to that account and promptly sent proof of payment to Makuyana.
The dealer reassured him, advising that the vehicle would arrive at Beitbridge Border Post within a few weeks for duty processing and payment.

However, as weeks passed, the promised vehicle failed to show up. Makuyana’s demeanor shifted; he became evasive, dodging meetings and making a series of empty promises. Gradually, he ceased all communication, leaving Chiweshe in the dark.
Frustrated and concerned, Chiweshe eventually filed a police report, but sadly, no recovery of funds or vehicle has been made.
As for Makuyana, he was granted bail of US$250 and has been ordered to report to the CID CCD biweekly as the case unfolds.
