On the fateful evening of last Wednesday, a routine homecoming for 35-year-old Edwin Chimbangu, a man who ran a vending business in Bulawayo’s Central Business District, ended in tragedy.
Edwin arrived home to find his wife, Happiness Chimbangu, had not prepared supper despite having all the necessary ingredients.
Instead of a warm welcome, Edwin got an unsettling reaction from Happiness.
Happiness raised her voice, threatening to harm herself with a kitchen knife. In response, Edwin quickly sprang into action, disarming her from the blade.
Feeling reassured, the couple’s two church elders and Edwin’s mother-in-law, also Happiness’ mother, were called to mediate and resolve the situation.
After sharing a quiet dinner of tea and calming their nerves, the family members retired to bed for the night.
However, it seemed Happiness’ anger had not dissipated.
At approximately 1 a.m., Happiness, seemingly undeterred by the calming influence of her family’s intervention, took action that would change the course of her life forever.
With a borrowed metal digger in hand, Happiness entered her bedroom where her husband, Edwin, and their children, Promise (4) and Prudence (7 months), lay sleeping.
Unleashing a brutal @tt@ck, Happiness struck Edwin three times—once on the throat and twice on the jaws.
Tragically, Edwin did not survive the @ss@ult.
Undaunted, Happiness continued her rampage, targeting her four-year-old son, Promise, with three d3adly blows to the neck, ultimately ending his life. But the horror didn’t end there.
In a chilling sequence of events, Happiness then struck her infant daughter, Prudence, with three lethal strikes to the head, causing the 7-month-old to become the youngest casualty of her alleged crime.
Following the gruesome @tt@ck, Happiness reportedly left the scene, making her way to the home of another church member, where she recounted the atrocities she had committed.
The court was left stunned by the revelations as Happiness stood accused of these heinous crimes.
After the harrowing account, Happiness was remanded in custody by Magistrate Mrs. Skhethile Moyo, awaiting her next court appearance on February 14.
