Heavy rain & winds expected in Zimbabwe

The Meteorological Services Department (MSD), in collaboration with the Department of Civil Protection, has issued a warning for severe weather conditions expected across Zimbabwe.

From Saturday, 8 February 2025, through Tuesday, 11 February 2025, the nation could face heavy rainfall exceeding 50mm, along with strong winds, lightning, and hailstorms.

The advisory, released on Friday, 7 February 2025, indicates that a low-pressure system over the Mozambique Channel is intensifying and moving westward.

This system is expected to bring thunderstorms and significant rain to various provinces, including Manicaland, Masvingo, and portions of Mashonaland East on the first day, Saturday.

Beginning Sunday, these conditions will extend to additional regions such as Bulawayo Metropolitan, Midlands, and Matabeleland South, continuing until Tuesday.

Given the forecast, the likelihood of flash floods is high, particularly in areas known to be vulnerable, such as flood-prone zones, river basins, and wetlands.

Residents in Mashonaland East, Manicaland, Masvingo, Southern Midlands, Bulawayo Metropolitan, and Matabeleland regions should remain vigilant.

In light of the impending storms, the MSD and the Department of Civil Protection are advising the public to take essential precautions:

1. Mend rooftops and secure loose outdoor items.
2. Ensure that animals are safely sheltered.
3. Trim any loose branches or debris that could pose a risk.

During storms, individuals are urged to:

– Stay indoors during lightning activity.
– Avoid seeking shelter under trees or near tall structures.
– Do not operate machinery or open vehicles, such as tractors.
– Steer clear of open areas and flooded regions.
– Refrain from using taps or showers during a storm.

The public is encouraged to stay updated with the latest information from official MSD channels, as severe weather events can lead to dangerous conditions across affected provinces.
