JOSHUA Nkomo Polytechnic is taking the Education 5.0 model to the next level after the institution established five subsidiary firms under Big Josh Private Limited.
The subsidiaries are expected to absorb graduating students from the polytechnic college.
962 students graduated with diplomas in education and other technical qualifications at the Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo Polytechnic this Friday.
The good news for the graduating students is that the institution has successfully registered five companies under the Big Josh Poly Private Limited, which will spearhead the government’s thrust to create employment.
One of the outstanding students, Trymore Mpofu summed up the new thrust that the institution is pursuing after she invented a domestic solar-powered pumping system to curb waterborne diseases and contamination.
“In line with the new thrust of the 5.0 education model, I am delighted to have contributed to this institution. I invented a solar-powered pumping system that eliminates human involvement as this causes contamination and diseases,” she said.
“We are so excited, I was teaching in Kezi and because of the new thrust managed to record songs in Kalanga and this new thrust will help transform once marginalised communities,” said another student.
The institution of higher learning is seized with establishing junior schools that will develop students that comprehend the new thrust of the Second Republic with little Big Josh ECD Centre already functional.
“The institution is in the process of establishing a secondary school with a bias towards Science subjects. We have also established an ECD centre and this employs graduates from this institution,” said JMN Polytechnic Principal, Dr Ngoni Moyo.
The government is committed to funding student-led consortiums in line with its thrust of establishing new industries through innovation hubs and industrial parks.
“We urge JMN to intensify the reach out to every corner of the region of the country in pursuit of socio-economic development goals through Integrated Skills Expansion Outreach Programme (ISEOP) extend, skills training programmes to the different rural communities in Matabeleland South,” said Permanent Secretary Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development, Professor Fanuel Tagwira.
The graduation ceremony encompassed 681 students from the teacher education and 281 from the technical division.
