AN elderly motorist narrowly avoided death when a tree branch crashed onto his moving vehicle in the Avenues area of Harare yesterday.
James Murakata (71), was driving a Toyota Corolla along Mazowe Road, coming from Parirenyatwa Hospital, when the accident occurred.
Harare City Council workers, who were cutting down the tree, failed to signal to him.
This resulted in the branch crashing onto the vehicle, leaving him with an injured left leg.
“Those who were cutting never put any sign to warn motorists.
“They instead accused me of attempting to drive past when the branch was falling,” said Murakata.
Aged trees dotted, around the Avenues and Avondale areas, have for many years been identified as potential risks to motorists.
A number of motorists have been in a long running dispute with the City of Harare over the issue.
